CASE STUDY

Patient and process map to support adoption of new technology

Situation

Our client developed a new treatment that would require the use of a companion diagnostic (CDx). There was a test available that was funded and used countrywide for screening and prevention purposes, which could also be used as a CDx. Expanding the use and funding of test to include a CDx role had several challenges.

Diagnosis

Before a submission could be made to expand test use, it was necessary to understand clinical and funding decision models. Research was recommended to determine the patient journey (including treatments) and the testing process map. Once this was understood, the client would be a better position to prepare the submission and support funding decision-making process.

Solution

DS&R conducted a multi-center, multi-province study to define patient journey, testing process and funding decision-making processes.

Result

The patient journey was examined at several sites in key provinces. The testing process was described for each site and consolidated into a model for their respective provinces. The provincial funding decision-making processes for each of provinces included in the study were summarized. The client was able to develop  more effective plans for the reimbursement of test as a CDx.
